Lesson 1: Egoism Vs. Purpose
Egoism- The theory that humans do or should seek only their individual happiness.
His- Father in Heaven
El Shaddai- “God Almighty”
Elohim- means “God”
Sola Fide- (Latin)- means “By faith alone”
Culpable- deserving blame
Knowledge- Obtained by education
Wisdom- Obtained from God. (Ask God for wisdom) – (EX: Solomon)
Our purpose is not to be confused with the contemplation of Egoism. Each of us has a purpose that is set according to His plan. Our purpose is for his glory and not for our own happiness. In our world today we can see the patterns of sin and how sin follows happiness. But with happiness, there is pleasure. What are we truly pleased about and who are we pleasing? Are we pleasing our flesh or our El Shaddai?
Mid Case Study:
1. Why can our pleasures be misleading?
2. What follows happiness?
In our world, we see that everyone sins against God. All of us have a great number of things in common. But one is Egoism. Most of our sin is from Egoism. We focus on what our flesh desires rather than what El Shaddai is trying to establish. Why do I say established? In the Biblical sense, I find things that are established to be renewed. Elohim established a world that was once perfect and sent his Son to die on the cross to renew our souls. Because of him doing so, we can obtain salvation also known as Sola Fide.
How do we find our purpose despite Egoism? As humans, we cannot fully stop living Egoistically. When we discover our purpose, our life becomes more complex and simpler. These two terms seem to contradict each other. Why? Our world is filled with complexity by the knowledge and wisdom we do not have. Our world becomes simpler by understanding where we came from and where we get our peace from. As humans we are culpable.
Case Study:
1. As Christians how do we function in an Egoistic world and society?
Function: How do we show peace through our godly actions? What would our godly actions prove to society about God’s nature and character?
2. What is a major example of Sola Fide?
3. As Christians and human beings how are we culpable and why?
